How do I play online with friends on Wire Chord?

Wire Chord lets you jam with other musicians over MIDI, right in the browser — no downloads and no account required. One person opens Wire Chord and creates a room, then shares the room code (or the room link) with everyone who's joining.

Everyone else opens Wire Chord, enters that same room code, and connects their MIDI keyboard, e-drum kit, or other MIDI controller. Pick an instrument sound and you're ready — every note you play is sent to the rest of the room in real time.

Add a password if you want the room private, or skip it for a quick open jam. Wire Chord works on desktop browsers with Web MIDI support (Chrome or Edge give the best results).

Question 2

I hear myself in one place but not the other. What’s going on?

Accepted Answer

WireChord sends MIDI over the network, not a microphone or audio recording of your instrument. What you hear in the browser is the app playing incoming MIDI from other musicians.

Your own keys are not played back in the tab. You hear yourself on your hardware or DAW. Your MIDI still goes to everyone else in the room.

Other players’ notes play in your tab after you’ve joined the same room and their MIDI is reaching the hub.

Question 3

I don’t hear anyone (or anything) after joining a room

Accepted Answer

Browsers often block audio until you interact with the page (click, tap, or key press). After joining, click inside the tab once and try again.

Check system volume, the correct output device (Bluetooth vs speakers), and that the browser tab isn’t muted.

Confirm you’re in the exact same room name/code as your friends and that the SignalR hub URL is correct and reachable.

Question 4

MIDI doesn’t seem to work or the room shows “no inputs”

Accepted Answer

Use a browser with Web MIDI (Chrome or Edge on desktop work best). Safari and most mobile browsers have limited or no Web MIDI access.

Connect your keyboard or virtual MIDI port before or after opening the room; if nothing appears, unplug/replug or refresh once the device is connected.

If the browser asks for permission to use MIDI devices, allow it. Corporate profiles or strict privacy settings can block access.

Question 5

I can’t create or join a room / connection errors

Accepted Answer

The hub URL must match your backend (including https in production). A typo or wrong port is the most common issue when the URL isn’t pre‑configured in the environment.

The API must be running and reachable from your network. Firewalls, VPNs, or ad blockers can interfere with SignalR.

If you self‑host, check CORS and that the negotiate endpoint matches what the client expects.

Sound is thin, delayed, or not like my real instrument

Accepted Answer

The in‑browser synth is a simple monitor for jamming, it won’t match a hardware synth or DAW plugin.

Latency depends on network round‑trip, buffer sizes, and your audio device. Playing across continents will feel slower than on a LAN.
